Local Lefty Blogger Lacks Any Sense of Irony

From Whallah!, a post that shows how a lot of lefties just can’t see their own behavior in any sort of objective light.
This site is obviously going to have some highly emotionally charged topics as it confronts the lies, the hypocrisies and the foibles of the local right wing media. This leads people to become very angry from time to time, and can cause commenting without thought.During the past week, I’ve had to eliminate two comments that went over the line in personal attacks. One was directed at McBride, one was at Fischer. The last time I had to remove a comment was during the IT affair. Four in the time I’ve been on my throne is not bad, but I do not want this to become a habit.
So far, so good. He’s insisting on some standards.

But then we have this immediately following:
I realize how tempting it is to become personal when writing about these people. It is also very difficult to exercise self-control, when those on the right do not. They will often vilify us, call us names, and make things very personal. But, this does not excuse us from our own behaviors.

Just as I do not hold terrorists to the standard that I judge my behavior, I do not hold these right wing hatemongers as a standard with which to use as a comparison. Because they choose to make base, false, and abusive comments, we do not need to stoop to their level.
He doesn’t get it.

He just doesn’t get it.

[Update]

A commenter to the post on Wallah! adds the following:
With their breezy, unknowingly transparent disregard for the least powerful, and with the bile they use to demonize anyone in opposition to their minority views, the members of the rightist chattering class have certainly earned any bad words that might come their way. I am of the opinion that they earned yet more than that.

But I guess I get it: No need to get into a p--ing contest with skunks.
This is a slightly different argument than that in the main post. This fellow is saying that conservatives deserve to be reviled.

This from the open-minded and tolerant liberal-left.

And just what don't I get, Professor? That civility is outmoded in some areas of the blogosphere? Or that playground bullying is not acceptable behavior for adults?

Or is the old adage, "Two wrongs don't make a right."

Well, please explain in more detail what you think he doesn't "get." We can't read your mind.

But what do I know? It's been suggested that I would eagerly have have sex with a horse.

I'm liberal.
I'm open minded - but that doesn't mean I am open minded to consider things that would hurt people.
I'm tolerant - but that doesn't mean I will tolerate everything. I saw 3 teens beating up a 4th here in Waterford.....I stepped in and broke it up because I don't tolerate violent behavior in front of me.
I think what you're missing - or don't get- is the concept that there are reasonable limits to being open minded and tolerant.

BTW, I like capper, but don't share his on this particular subject. So, could you please stop insisting that all liberals are indistinguishable from each other. That would be more of a right wing characteristic.

McAdams, how exactly does one commenter become the representative and the signifier? To wit, my horse-sex example. Should I think that all bloggers behave that way? Is Peter an example of all Wisconsinites? Should I proclaim that "all Catholic conservatives are just like Peter"?

Why did Fred RDW think it was improper for anyone to refer to Peter by any nickname, yet there was no recognition that Peter verily defines his blogging style by the use of purposefully offensive nicknames and dismissive overarching insults?

"a lot of lefties just can’t see their own behavior in any sort of objective light."

I think this summs it up: I used to teach at Marshall and becuase I wouldn't join the teachers mentality I was ostracized because I was a conservative ans spoke up.

I was also personally blamed for Iraq from a liberal i knew. She said to me "thanks for the war."
I laughed and told her that I told Bush to wait an extra 10 days. Needless to say she did not find me amusing.
Civility has lacked in my experiences from many liberals.

That reads incredibly naive, and elitist to me. How ironic that you would not judge; then proceed to judge another group you disagree with.

Perhaps you can send out a memo to the vast hate filled leftists, in the blogosphere, as they set records lows to that "level" quite often. In case you haven't noticed.....

At least have the honesty to admit both sides, at a zealot level, behave comparably at times.

Other than affirming your world view, what was your point?

Because, it looks like a bitter Olive branch to me.

"That would be more of a right wing characteristic."

I'm going to make life easier by mandating that all people put "left wing" and "right wing" tattoo's on their foreheads. That way we can immediately identify EXACTLY how that individual thinks. We'll be able to see in to their hearts, minds, and souls with two little words.

Life will be perfect.

I think I get it.

I am assuming that John's original post is meant to highlight that Whallah! was launched to harass(Right)/expose(Left) Jessica McBride. It has since expanded its sites to target with the same vehemence other local conservatives as well.

The blog was founded on cruelty and is consistently ridden with bitter personal attacks, for the most part absent of intelligent analysis and civil discourse. Points are routinely couched in angry terms.

It seems just a bit odd for Whallah! to put out a call for civility.

Of course, there are the ill-mannered and hateful on both the Left and the Right.

Personally, I dismiss those incapable of discussing issues with at least a minimal degree of respect.

Allow me to translate - if this person had his way, non-liberals would have violence, imprisonment, reeducation camps, and probably death for not thinking the liberal way. I've seen this coming for a while now. Glad someone was willing to put it into words.

I see what you mean Mary. Refuting what McBride, Sykes, Belling, et al. claim with proof, by highlighting the absurdity of their positions with satire, and by giving a platform and a voice that the right would try to take away, well, that's just awful.

Perhaps, I should be more like Charlie and mock people. Or more like Peter, and just call them names. Is that what you suggesst? I am sorry if you don't like having the local right media confronted on their lies and hateful positions, but that does not qualify as abusive.

It is interesting that the Professor hasn't clarified his meaning yet, either. Perhaps there wasn't one.

Capper, your "refutations" are riddled with vicious remarks. Any elements of satire are lost in the slime. That's the point.

To depict your blog as a platform for the voiceless is silly. How is anyone on the Right trying to take away your right to voice your opinions? You obviously aren't being silenced.

If you believe that the local conservative media are lying or promoting hateful positions, then lay out your case. If you have proof, then offer it.

Why take the luster off your brilliance by debasing yourself? Share it in a manner that earns the respect of others, especially those on the Right.

I'd love to see an extended discussion about civility. Did I miss the discussion of civility on Texas Hold 'Em? (Here, Trigger!) Is there an audio archive of a Sykes show where he discusses his proposal to have everyone coexist and stop calling each other names? Hurrah for Whallah to even try to have the discussion. Join right in. I'm still waiting for the Professor's elucidation for us dense students in the back of the class who just didn't get it the first time around.
