Obama to Elderly Mom: Die

When Obama talks about “cost savings” under a nationalized health care plan, he must be talking about something like this. Indeed, the leftist policy wonks who have been pushing socialized medicine (most of them not runing for office) had been quite frank about what they want. If you are old, if the care doesn’t promise a lot of additional years of life, then die.

Even though you are opposed to the president's position on most everything, in this case, aren't his words compatible with a Catholic position - a position that values care along with cure, that distinguishes ordinary and extraordinary measures, that accepts natural death and accompanies the dying?

Anon.

The problem is, I don't trust government bureaucrats to decide who must die and when.

So far as I'm concerned, people at the end of life can say they don't want extraordinary measures. I had an aunt who declined to have dialysis.

But I wouldn't want any government bureaucrat deciding my aunt didn't deserve to live.

Did you watch the video? Don't you think the woman should have had the pacemaker?

Well, Anon, since you decided to bring up Catholicism:

In answer to your question: No. Obama's position on care is a strictly utilitarian one, and thus utterly opposed to the Catholic Church's morally-based position.

You might say that the Church's position is based on the absolute sanctity of human life, and Obama's position is based on the absolute sanctity of whatever is convenient to the State.

An anecdote:

A friend of mine used to work, many years ago, at a Catholic-run hospital (long enough ago that most of the nurses were nuns.) One of the doctors was an arrogant SOB, and one night he treated a nurse and a patient with rudeness and callousness. The next morning the nun who ran that floor summoned him to her office and told him "You're fired. Get out now." That would be very unlikely to happen nowadays, especially in a socialized system. (Just read the reports coming out of Britain.)

Someone once said that the fundamental mistake of socialism is in thinking that the government can love us. That is not true of Christianity. There are many nuns who feel a calling to serve in hospitals out of a deep and abiding desire to not just express love but practice it where it is most needed--which is why for so many years Catholic hospitals enjoyed a high reputation. But one would be a fool to expect the drones of a government bureaucracy to love us. Hillary doesn't love us. Obama doesn't love us. Union stewards and careerist bureaucrats don't love us, and I would deeply resent being forced to depend on their nonexistent love.

That was a horrible example of the obomanation for the health plan. I don't know of very many people (seriously) who are going to sit back and think to themselves that a woman who is 105 years old needs $1 million in healthcare to keep her going for another 2 years. Try more realistic approaches like:

www.therealcuba.com

and look at their health care for those that are less than 100 years old.

As opposed to posting stuff about 150 year old pieces of ham with eyes (sorry to be blunt, but that is what the public will view your opinion as) start looking at the damn reality of the situation.

The government will never match the love and care I receive from my insurance company. They truly love me more than my mother and God combined. Thank you, oh loving and caring insurance companies.

The insurance companies exist in a competitive environment. If any insurance company refuses to pay for things that Marquette employees believe they need, the University would move to another provider.

This clip is edited. You don't hear his entire response from this editing. But perhaps that is too nuanced for you, and you need to disengage from full discussion and stratify everything into sound bites that are easily digestible. And perhaps that is what we deserve if we can't discern your video chicanery here.

I don't see any evidence of editing. If you think it is, please post a link to the unedited version.

The fundamental problem is that Obama should simply have said "yes" to the woman. But he didn't. He just talked about "better end of life decisions."

We all know what that means.
